About the CFSL
The Certificate in Fire Service Leadership (CFSL) provides fire service officers with opportunities to expand their knowledge of the fire service and add management education to their technical training. The CFSL has been offered across Canada since 1996. It is a prerequisite for the Certificate in Fire Service Administration (CFSA).
Applicants for the CFSL must have at least 3 years of experience working or volunteering in the fire service.
The CFSL is offered entirely by distance education. Students receive course materials, study, write and submit assignments. Instructors grade the assignments and comment on the students' work. A list of instructors is available under the link in the menu to the left.

Requirements for the Certificate
In order to obtain the Certificate in Fire Service Leadership you must complete 3 required courses. The certificate takes approximately 1 year to complete if a student completes one course in each term. The course descriptions are available under the link on the menu to the left.
Students are required to complete 3 to 5 assignments for one course. The assignments are sent to instructors who grade them and return them to the students. Students can contact instructors by phone or e-mail during the term for assistance. Most assignments require studying chapters in textbooks and articles. Usually students write essays that apply what they have learned to a practical situation.
Students should expect to complete an assignment every 16 or 17 days. Students can work at a faster rate if they wish.
Instructors usually return assignments within one week of receiving them. Our instructors are fire service officials, university professors, lawyers, engineers and emergency physicians.
