Negotiation and Conflict Management Program

The Dalhousie University College of Continuing Education offers expertise that can assist organizations and communities improve their response to conflict. We are happy to work with you to develop a step-wise approach that can include building individual and team skills, individual coaching and improved conflict management systems.

The College began offering courses and workshops in negotiation and conflict management in 1996 in response to community interest. Given our own belief that more collaborative responses to conflict are needed, and inspired by the efforts of people associated with the Program on Negotiation at Harvard University, we sought to provide learning opportunities to assist individuals and organizations take on a leadership role in changing their response to conflict in their workplaces, communities, and personal relationships.

For ten years, we offered a Certificate program involving workshops on negotiation, mediation, difficult conversations and multi-stakeholder processes as well as individual conflict coaching. Hundreds of people have availed themselves of these workshops and dozens more have earned a Certificate, committed as they are to practicing, and helping others to practice, a more collaborative approach to conflict. We have worked with people in a variety of settings including schools, courts, government departments, businesses and community organizations.

As of August 1, 2009, the College has shifted its efforts in this important area to working with organizations to help develop customized interventions that can produce lasting results in managing conflict and cultivating collaboration. We would be pleased to meet with you to discuss your needs.

If you live in Atlantic Canada and are interested in developing your own skills we would refer you to the Executive and Professional Development Program at St. Mary’s University in Halifax and the Centre for Conflict Resolution Studies at UPEI. The UPEI program offers a wide range of workshops in both Charlottetown and Moncton and includes a skills assessment component as a certificate requirement and opportunity for personal feedback.
