Certificate Program in Environmental Management
This program provides a solid understanding of environmental management using engineering principles combined with environmental and human health hazard considerations. The program has been designed mainly for the part-time learner who is currently employed in the field. The program places a special emphasis on practical applications of internationally recognized environmental standards. Graduates of this program will be valuable to employers because they will have the added advantage of having been trained to assume management responsibilities for environmental matters according to generally accepted principles and practices. Being able to function competently and productively in dual roles, graduates of the Environmental Management Program will fill an important gap in the labour market. Successful completion of the certificate program is a testimony to the participant's having attained proficiency in the interdisciplinary field of environmental management. Program emphasis is on critical thinking, problem assessment and problem solving consistent with work place application of environmental management.
Certificate Requirements
This program consists of six courses - four required courses and two electives. There is a student evaluation at the end of each course.
Admission Requirements
The program is intended for individuals having a strong background in science/engineering with interest in environmental management. Applicants for the program should normally have a bachelor of engineering, science or planning degree or a technologists/technicians certificate with 3-5 years of related experience. Individuals who have a high school diploma and at least five years of related experience may be admitted to the program.
Admission with Advanced Standing
An exemption of up to two courses may be granted to students who have successfully completed training equivalent to the compulsory courses. Those seeking an exemption must apply in writing to the Program Director and provide details of the training and mark achieved for which they are seeking an exemption. Training should be taken within the last five years and a mark of no lower than 70% must have been achieved. Course exemptions do not apply to elective courses.
Scheduling
With courses being offered over three terms yearly, from mid September to the end of June, the program may be completed within two years. A maximum of four years is allowed to complete the program.
