Certificate Program in Information Design & Management for the Web
This certificate program provides a comprehensive understanding of issues related to the development and maintenance of information published on the Web. Course topics range from web site design and implementation to JAVA programming. In addition to web publishing courses, other courses consider how to manage information on the World Wide Web. Courses in this area include operating systems such as UNIX and issues related to the management of information systems in organizations. Optional courses in the certificate program examine how information is shared within organizations. Courses in this area include database management and designing secure networks.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for the program should normally have successfully completed at least one year of full-time university studies. Students over twenty-three years of age who have a high school diploma and at least two years of experience in the use of computers may be admitted to the program.
A knowledge of C Programming and UNIX are necessary prerequisites, therefore, students are strongly advised to begin their program by taking Introduction to C Programming and UNIX Fundamentals. Internet experience is recommended.
Admission with Advanced Standing
An exemption of up to two courses may be granted to students who have successfully completed equivalent courses.
Certificate Requirements
The certificate is awarded after successful completion of all program requirements. Students are required to complete seven courses, including four compulsory courses. Students choose three optional courses.
There is a student evaluation at the end of each course. Candidates for the certificate program must attain a minimum of 50 percent in each individual course and an average of at least 60 percent in the program.
The progress of students may be reviewed at any time; in the case of unsatisfactory performance, the student may not be permitted to continue in the program. All requirements must be met within four years.
Scheduling
Typically each course has between 21 and 36 contact hours spread over 7-12 sessions of 3 hours each. Lab work outside of the class hours can be scheduled by those who do not own a computer. However, access to a computer and an internet connection is recommended. Some of the courses may be offered in a seminar format.
