100% Online

Description
The Certificate in Process Instrumentation and Control (I&C) is a 100% online program. The program consists of three modules covering the different phases of I&C from a non-mathematical and practical point of view. It includes the basic concepts, the engineering and the installation of control equipment.

What You Will Learn
    1.   The basics of I&C including the different control functions, the types of control loops and continuous vs. discrete control
    2.   The identification and symbols used in I&C
    3.   The different types of field instrumentation, their principle of operation, the advantages and disadvantages and the application of the different types of sensors for flow, level, pressure and temperature measurements as well as for control valves
    4.   The requirements for control rooms and the design of control panels
    5.   The concepts and implementation of alarm and trip systems
    6.   The different types of computer-based control systems including PLCs and DCSs as well as review the basic requirements for good operator interface
    7.   The documentation required for I&C, for front-end engineering and for detail design
    8.   The requirements for a successful installation, instrument checkout and controller tuning
    9.   Project implementation and project management
    10.  Decision making tools; Auditing, Evaluation of Plant Needs, Justification and Control System Evaluation
Who Should Attend
This course is intended for those who would like to learn about the field of I&C in a condensed time frame and from a practical point of view and/or for those who would just like to communicate with I&C personnel. The course is designed to provide attendees with sufficient knowledge to move into the field of I&C. It is applicable to technical and supervisory personnel. It is presumed that participants come from a setting where they can apply the knowledge received.

Course Content
This online course has three modules:
  • Module 1 with 6 sessions
  • Module 2 with 5 sessions
  • Module 3 with 5 sessions
Save $390! Register and pay $3595 for the entire Certificate in advance.

Note: It is highly recommended that participants attend Modules 1, 2 and 3 in their sequential order. We are unable to accommodate requests for advanced standing. Participants must complete all 3 modules including all quizzes and exams in order to be awarded a Certificate in Process Instrumentation & Control. In special circumstances a participant may complete a certificate module outside the regular program schedule on a self study basis. Application for self study must be sent in writing to the Program Director.

Certificate Requirements
The certificate is awarded after the completion of the three modules, including all quizzes and final exams. This represents approximately 91 hours of training which includes classroom and online sessions, home study, assignments and exam preparation. The participants must attain a minimum of 65 percent for each module and an aggregate average of at least 75 percent in the program.

Marking Scheme
The grade will be based upon quizzes and the three final exams.

1 - Quizzes:
    a) There are 16 quizzes - one per session.
    b) There is an unlimited time for the students to submit a quiz. However, quizzes must be done before their corresponding final exam.
    c) Students are allowed only one attempt to answer each question.
2 - Final Exams:
    a) There are three final exams.
    b) There is a 14-day window for the students to submit each final exam. This window will be open for 14 days - starting at the last online session of each module (i.e., at sessions 6, 11 and 16).
    c) Students are allowed only one attempt to answer each question.
Missed final exam
If you have a valid doctor's note, you can re-schedule missed final exams.

Course Delivery
1 - This online class will be delivered 100% online using the Blackboard Learning System (BLS).

2 - Studying material consists of:
    a) The assigned chapter(s), and
    b) The assigned notes in a particular session.

All students are expected to access the studying material and review all assigned materials from the handbook.

The online session should provide ample time for students' questions and discussions.

The online session IS NOT a substitute for reviewing the assigned materials as it will not be possible to cover all the session's material in a 60 minute tutorial.
3 - Each session has reading material (the assigned notes) followed by a quiz.
It is recommended that students read the corresponding chapter in the textbook and the assigned notes provided BEFORE the online session.

During the 60 minute online session (starting every Tuesday at 7:00 PM EST), that session/chapter will be discussed and all questions answered.
4 - The course has 17 sessions.
    a) The first is an introductory session - a "get-to-know-you session." It is recommended that all students be present online at this session.
    b) The following 16 sessions cover the technical material to be studied.
Instructor Availability
1 - Post any questions on Blackboard, all answers will also be posted on Blackboard - this ensures that all student are able to benefit from questions and answers, just like in a traditional classroom.

2 - Only use email for "personal questions." The instructor will reply to you within two business days.

Required Reference Book
The latest edition will be mailed to the enrolled students upon registration. The Condensed Handbook of Measurement and Control, 3rd edition, by N.E. Battikha.

Instructor
N.E. (Bill) Battikha, P.Eng., is a registered Professional Engineer with over 30 years of experience in the field of Process Instrumentation and Control, working mainly in Canada and the USA . He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He generated and conducted Instrumentation and Control training courses for over 10 years at many universities and at the ISA.

Bill co-authored a patent and has written three books on Instrumentation and Controls, all published by the ISA, with the last book being an ISA best-seller. Bill is also a member of many ISA committees generating new standards. He has presented papers at many international conferences and has written numerous articles for major technical magazines.

Bill's engineering activities cover the development of engineering standards and the generation of control philosophies and functional specifications. He designed complete control systems, guided and inspected the work of engineering consultants, monitored contractors on-site, and personally carried on plant commissioning and start-up. Bill assisted plants in resolving and troubleshooting difficult problems from conceptual engineering to maintenance. He also performed plant audits and assisted construction and maintenance personnel in resolving difficult technical issues. Bill implemented control systems using microcomputers, programmable controllers, DCSs, and analog instrumentation. Bill is the President of BergoTech Inc. - a firm specializing in Instrumentation and Control Engineering.
