ESL Placement Tests

Test is computer based and will test your ability in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Foundation English

This is an 8 week, 240 hour, full time course in General English with an academic skills focus. This is an intermediate level course consisting of six units of study. Through your study of these units, you will gain a thorough understanding of English grammar, and develop your reading, listening, writing, speaking skills and your academic study skills in preparation for further studies in the Global Assessment Certificate (GAC) or the English for Academic Purposes course (EAP).

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

This course is designed to fully develop your EAP skills for effective study at university. You will be taken through the stages of essay writing, planning, researching, collecting and organizing information, and reading academic articles. Equal emphases are placed on writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills development. Your skills in paraphrasing and summarizing will be consolidated and you will give seminar presentations.

Global Assessment Certificate (GAC)

The Global Assessment Certificate (GAC) is a nine-month university preparation program that provides strong English language training in an integrated learning environment. It is designed to develop English language skills in an academic setting which enhances student preparation for university study. It is designed for students who have applied and have been accepted into a Dalhousie undergraduate program but do not meet the University's English language proficiency requirements.
